Demystifying SEO Myths

Search Engine Optimization is a heady online promotion technique; when done right, it can open floodgates to allow a seemingly unstoppable flow of traffic to your website. But it isn’t as easy as it sounds. Many budding online marketers, business owners and Search Engine Optimization(SEO) enthusiasts head off into blind alleys focusing so much on writing for search engines with extra emphasis on keywords and keyword density, leading themselves into dead-ends, spending time and effort on abortive efforts to get websites found through  organic searches. Myths can kill. Let’s bust a few of them right away:

If one is good, two isn’t better: Keywords are the building blocks of your content strategy and you should focus on the keywords or Key phrases that define your niche. However, dumping too many keywords within your articles – or content of any kind –  is harmful to your online success.  Journalistic and literary communities have been against being too wordy for a long time now and writing on the web calls for even more stringent adherence to usage of as few words as possible. On top of that, if you dump too many keywords or keyphrases within your content, your content isn’t going to serve any purpose. Further, Google is likely to slap you with a title called “trasher”. You don’t want any of that, do you?

Write for people, not spiders: It is beyond any doubt that Search Marketing is probably one of the best ways to get traffic for your website. More traffic to your website only means a fatter or cherubic bottom line for your enterprise. However, writing content with a sole purpose of manipulating search engines is a blunder you should try to avoid at all costs.  People pay for your services and products and not search engines. Clicks don’t make you much money (Google adsense and other such programs). Provide value, engage, motivate, inform, instill ideas, teach or train or entertain people with your content. Spiders don’t pay.

You can’t beat Google with an inch long stick and you can’t be on top forever: Even if you master the Search Engine Marketing game, nothing is etched in stone for you and your business. Additionally, the search algorithms keep changing rapidly so you either spend all your  time, energy and efforts trying to figure out how the algorithms work or work on your business. Also, when it comes to search engine listings, your position on the search listings is never guaranteed. Here today, gone tomorrow. To help you have a holistic marketing plan, use more than just a couple of methods for online promotions.

SEM is dynamic and you could never master it, as long as it keeps shedding its old skin for a new one. Staying abreast of the latest information and doing what you should is the best thing to do.  What are your thoughts?

  4. Excellent article. I am always struggling with SEO/SEM and hoping that Google is noticing my site. Since I have been using the WP plugin All In One SEO I have seen my search “hits” increase.

I also agree when you write – write for your audience and not the spider.
