Tweetups are not just for Geeks

What is a tweetup anyways?  Its what you think it is, a group of people who meet up as a result of conversing on Twitter.   And since twitter has become mainstream, so are the tweetups.  Most tweetups are scheduled, but some are spontaneous.  I never actually thought I would be part of one, nor had I any interest until last December.  It was a slow week at the office right before the holidays.  I checked my twitterfox (I now use Tweetdeck), when I happened to glance at a tweet from a podcaster that I have listened to from time to time, Joseph Jaffe.  He tweeted that he, along with a colleague, Adam Broitman, would be at a starbucks, just a few blocks from me.  Not sure what came over me, perhaps it was my curiosity to see if this could happen!  Could I actually meet someone via 140 characters or less?  Half an hour later, there I was, entering a Starbucks.  And there was no confirmation needed, two gentleman with their laptops and iphones displayed, it was obvious that Twitterverse had become a reality.  I offered them coffee, and we chatted for about half an hour about online marketing, some cool applications, and a new book that Jaffe was promoting called “Join the Conversation“.   I was introduced to brightkite, as Adam snapped a photo with is iphone, transmitted it to brightkite, and tweeted about the pic post.  Thanks to Jaffe, I now use OutTwit, an application that syncs important tweets with my Outlook.  I will never forget how he described twitter as being serependitious.  Serependitious indeed!, and fun to share it with people that are in this fast moving medium that I am in.  It was a pleasure guys!

My second tweetup was of a different nature.  I had developed a relationship with a tweeter who started following me as a result of an interest I had in his industry.  Over the last 6 months, we have traded twitter app ideas and tweeted about each others businesses.  After a bit of a hiatus, and a job change, we reconnected and discussed meeting in person.  Why not? Our twitter chemistry was in sync, so we agreed to have lunch and continue our conversations.  As expected, we continued to dish out ideas beyond twitter, including blogging, ppc, and optimization that were no longer limited to tweet characters.

So I have had the spontaneous, the scheduled, I wonder when will be my next tweet up?   When will be yours?
